The 2024 Food Waste Index report, from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) mentions that in 2022, 1.05 billion tons of food waste were produced in the world.

Food waste causes climate change and pollution as well as the degradation of nature. According to the latest report on the Food Waste Index published by UNEP, mentions that 1.05 billion tons of food waste were produced, or 132 kilograms per inhabitant and almost a fifth of all food available to consumers. At the same time, 783 million people are affected by hunger and a third of humanity faces food insecurity. According to Inger Andersen, executive director of UNEP, “this is a major development problem and that the consequences of this unnecessary waste result in substantial costs for the climate and nature...”
