In order to support economic and social development in Africa, Italy and the African Development Bank (AfDB) announced a partnership on Wednesday 18 June last year.

The partnership was signed between the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the President of the ADB Group, Akinwumi A. Adesina. The two leaders held their meetings on the sidelines of the G7 Summit of Heads of State and Government in Puglia. The discussion focused on the imminent launch of a series of joint initiatives in line with Italy's Mattei Plan for Africa and the Programme of the Rome Process sur la migration et le développement, comme convenu lors du Sommet Italie-Afrique à Rome

in January 2024.

According to Giorgia Meloni, Plan Mattei aims to establish economic and strategic partnerships with African countries and institutions. The Italian Prime Minister said that “the AfDB was the ideal financial partner for the implementation of this plan, with significant potential for Italian companies to participate in joint initiatives in the public and private sectors in Africa.”

Pour Akinwumi Adesina, “this partnership would have a major impact on the continent, in particular by strengthening access to energy, by fighting climate change, by promoting food security, and by creating jobs for young people, thus contributing & worsen; reduce migration factors”.
