A workshop to strengthen the compliance of the real estate sector in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing opened on 14 April 2025 at the Sarakawa Hotel in Lomé. The meeting is organized by the Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (BAD), as part of the BAD CD 4AML/CTF project

Over the course of four days of reflections, participants will deepen their knowledge of risks specific to the real estate sector and develop practical solutions to better detect and prevent these risks. The workshop represents an important step in this common struggle. This meeting will allow the various stakeholders to deepen their knowledge of risks specific to the sector, while developing practical solutions to better detect and prevent them. It is also an opportunity for actors to reflect together in order to build a coordinated and harmonized approach

The Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Urbanism, Housing and Land Reform, Dr. Komla Edoh, on behalf of the responsible minister, recalled the challenges related to the real estate sector, the actions taken by the government, while stressing the need to put in place effective mechanisms to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

According to reports, the real estate sector plays a crucial role in a country's economy. It generates direct and indirect jobs in various fields. Real estate transactions also stimulate the local economy, by generating tax revenue.
