The Ghanaian Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on Monday, May 26, 2025, the temporary closure of the Ghanaian embassy in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The aim is the “restructuring and reengineering of systems”, after allegations of corrupt practices emerged

.

The Ghanaian Foreign Minister announced the decision concerning the temporary closure of the Ghanaian Embassy in the United States on the X platform (formerly Twitter ), stating that a specialized audit team discovered that a local employee in the embassy's IT department had set up an unauthorized link on the embassy's website, redirecting visa and passport applicants to his company. He charged additional fees for various services without the knowledge of the department and kept the profits in his private account. According to the latter, “the investigations reveal that he and his collaborators had been managing this clandestine system for at least five years.” The minister said that all foreign ministry staff deployed in this embassy had been recalled to the country with immediate effect, and that the embassy's IT department was dissolved without delay

.

The Ghanaian minister indicated that “the Ghanaian embassy in Washington DC will be closed for a few days from today.”
