It is expressed in a context where the Guinean economic sector is going through a crisis marked by a severe lack of liquidity
.La crise à laquelle est soumis le secteur économique guinéen se justifie selon the governor of the Central Bank by the significant increase in the Guinean population. According to him, the highest bill in circulation to date is that of 20,000 Guinean francs, issued since 2015. However, he said, in ten years, the population grew from 9 to 13 million inhabitants, while the GDP grew from 8 to 24-25 billion dollars. During the presentation of the report on the regional economic outlook for sub-Saharan Africa, Karamo Kaba pointed out that “activity has quadrupled, the population has almost doubled, but the biggest cut has remained the same.” With a value of around 2 euros or 2 dollars, the 20,000 GNF note is no longer enough to absorb the growth in trade, thus complicating banking logistics. According to the governor, this situation “justifies serious consideration of the introduction of a ticket more adapted to the économie current one”.
Through this proposal, Karamo Kaba is relaunching a strategic debate on the modernization of the Guinean monetary system, in a context where the country seeks to strengthen the stability of its currency and promote banking.
