On Tuesday, July 22, 2024, Mauritania and Chad signed a partnership agreement in Nouakchott in order to strengthen education systems in both countries.

With an amount of 137 million dollars, supported by the World Bank and the Federal Republic of Germany, the partnership agreement is intended for the regional commitment project for learning and collaboration in education (RELANCE) which will be implemented in the two countries of the Sahel. This project is considered to be “a flagship initiative designed to improve education systems, expand access to quality education, and strengthen employment prospects for vulnerable youth in Chad and Mauritania.” This project is the result of an observation by experts from both countries and institutions such as the World Bank: education in the Sahel is experiencing a major crisis, mainly due to demographic pressure, the scarcity of resources, armed conflicts with their corollary, with their corollary, in particular the displacement of populations... it will be able to welcome other Sahel countries wishing

to join.

According to the Mauritanian Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Sid'Ahmed Bouh, “the signing of the financing agreements for the RELANCE Sahel project reflects our collective commitment to building a resilient, educated and resolutely forward-looking Sahel”. This project marks an important step towards the construction of a more integrated Sahelian educational space, capable of meeting the aspirations of dynamic and committed youth. For Ousmane Diagana, Vice President of the World Bank in West and Central Africa, “the RELANCE project thus reflects our shared desire to make education a transformative force in Mauritania and Chad, by training enlightened generations, ready to meet the challenges of

tomorrow.”

The project involves the establishment, in Nouakchott, of a Regional Institute of Educational Sciences to support executive training, the production of applied research, and the development of evidence-based education policies.
