On Wednesday 23 July 2025 in Banjul, thousands of people came forward to denounce corruption and bad governance in The Gambia. According to the demonstrators, this has started since Gambian President Adama Barrow came to power in 2017

.

Among the demonstrators, some held up banners or signs that read: “The health system is broken, the leaders are complaining! or “Gambians are not slaves to corruption.” They also called for more justice in the country, accusing the power of President Adama Barrow of being guilty of several scandals. In particular, they blame the Barrow regime for the death in 2022 of dozens of children due to adulterated cough syrups imported from

India.

According to reports, seventy children aged 5 years or younger died in 2022 after taking these over-the-counter medications, which caused a national outcry in this small West African country with a population of around 2.5 million people.

Other points of dispute include alleged financial scandals related in particular to the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, or an alleged embezzlement within the management of the Port of Gambia.
