He thus won the first prize of $50,000.
In the early hours of Saturday, after crossing the finish line, Kibet knelt down due to exhaustion and had to crawl a few meters before medical personnel helped him. For his part, Ethiopia's Dekeba Mitku Tafa (2.15.04) won second place and the $40,000 offered, just past Kibet to the finish line. For his part, Bernard Sang, another Kenyan, returned (17/02/17) to choose the $30,000 intended for the third winner. Ethiopia's Guta Alemenseh Herpha was the first woman runner in the women's category of the 42Km road race to cross the finish line in 2 hours.
While Kenya's Naomi Maiyo finished third in (2.40.57), another Ethiopian Kebene Urusa (2.40.45) was second to receive $40,000 for her effort. As for the Nigerian women, Deborah Pam Bading (2.49.33) finished first in the women's 42 km followed by Elizabeth Nuhu (3.00.20) while Dimatu Yohanna (3.02.12) finished third.
