The 2022 fertilizer trade statistics were presented in Ghana on Friday, March 3, 2023 during technical fertilizer working groups organized by the African Fertilizer Initiative of the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC). They revealed that Ghana exported a total of 31,922 metric tons (tm) of fertilizer in 2022 compared to 1,244 mt in 2021.

A total of 486,203 tons of fertilizer were imported last year, 459,513 tons were consumed by farmers, compared with 239,062 tons and 242,334 tons respectively imported and consumed in 2021 according to statistics. Emmanuel Nunoo Lartey, sales agronomist at Agricultural Manufacturing Group (AMG) Limited, intending to shed light on the high export rate for 2022, said that his business was expanding to neighboring countries as well as the fertilizer situation in Togo, Burkina Faso and Mali.

According to him, there was a shortage of fertilizers in these countries and they also did not have the raw materials to produce the fertilizer blends, “so they had to fall on us to supply them” he hinted. Some of the fertilizers exported included sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and NPK14-23-14.
