Minister Ousmane Mamadou Kane affirmed on Saturday, February 18, 2023 that Mauritania has fallen into the category of intermediate countries in terms of indebtedness.

According to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the indebtedness of foreign countries is classified, according to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as low, medium, and high, based on the ratio of public debt to GDP. Indeed, during a meeting with the German Minister for Economic Cooperation, Svenja Schulze, Mamadou Kane assured that Mauritania's transition to the intermediate country category will qualify the country for increasing funding opportunities granted by financial partners.

Intermediate states are classified in the middle-income country categories of the World Bank and in the group of developing countries that are not members of the WTO G20. They are not industrialized enough to be part of the NPIs, but they are much richer, overall, than the LDCs (least developed countries).
