On the morning of Monday, February 27, 2023, the meeting of the joint supervisory committee for the “North Electrical Interconnection” project took place in Ouagadougou. Occasionally, participants held discussions on the status of work to ensure the timely implementation of the project.

The meeting, chaired by the Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries of Burkina Faso, Simon Pierre Boussim, aimed to take stock of the progress of the work and ensure the timely implementation of the project. This 880km-long interconnection line will have a capacity of around 430 MW, which could reach more than 600 MW five to ten years after its commissioning, according to the organizers. It will serve to connect five countries, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Togo.

This project aims to involve the electrification of rural communities located within a radius of 5km on either side of the line, and the implementation of & Oelig; the implementation of several environmental and social mitigation measures. It will facilitate energy exchanges in the subregion, provide technical assistance to promote effective trade agreements between member states, and increase access to electricity for populations living along the transmission line.
