New York (awp/afp) - The pound rose against the major currencies on Monday on the back of optimism about the resumption of trade talks between the United Kingdom and the European Union, while the dollar weakened. a little weakened.

Around 7:10 p.m. GMT (9:10 p.m. in Paris), the pound gained 0.67% against the greenback, at 1.2832 dollars, and 0.39% against the European currency, at 90.89 pence for one euro.

Earlier in the day in London, it had even exceeded 1% upside against the two currencies, which is unusual in the foreign exchange market, which is less volatile than other markets.

“The pound is starting the week off on the right foot in a more optimistic Brexit environment,” commented Fiona Cincotta, analyst for City Index.

Pressed for time and despite confidence shaken by the British reversal of the Brexit treaty, the United Kingdom and the EU resume dialogue on Monday, with the hope that an agreement on their future trade relationship remains possible.

At the heart of these discussions, the very controversial bill currently being examined in the British Parliament, which calls into question certain commitments made by the United Kingdom in the agreement governing its departure from the EU on January 31.

If this text casts "a shadow over the discussions", "the fact that the EU has not yet put an end to the negotiations is encouraging", explained Ms Cincotta.

Elsewhere, according to Sebastien Clements, analyst for OFX, the pound increased its gains after Dave Ramsden, a Bank of England official, “dismissed the prospect of negative interest rates in the short term”.

Such a hypothesis has become more and more likely over the weeks and while the institution has announced that it is thinking concretely about this possibility.

A further drop in interest rates, down to negative territory, affects the return on the currency and therefore its appeal to traders.

In addition, the euro gained 0.28% against the greenback at 1.1663 dollars.
