European stock exchanges are expected to open higher, the market is scrutinizing statements from Davos. The Eurostoxx 50 opened at 3,657.03 points (+0.45%), the CAC 40 at 6,285.24 points (+0.20%), the DAX 40 at 13,981.91 points (+0.72%), the FTSE 100 at 7,389.98 points (+1.19%), the IBEX 35 at 8.4 84.50 points (+0.93%), the DJIA at 31,261.90 points (+0.03%), the Nasdaq at 11,354.62 points (-0.30%), the S&P 500 at 3,901.36 points (+0.01%) and the Nikkei 225 at 26,891.36 points (+0.57%).

As far as exchange rates are concerned, the change from the close in New York indicates that EUR/USD is at 1.0592   (+0.26%), EUR/JPY at 134.91 (-0.14%) and USD/JPY at 127.38 (-0.40%).

 

Investors will follow the first council of ministers of the Borne government on Monday, appointed Friday afternoon. On the corporate side, bioMérieux brings together its shareholders at a general meeting. European equity markets are expected to gain ground at the opening on Monday, as investors' attention turns to Davos where many business and policymakers are meeting this week for the World Economic Forum. Around 7:30 a.m., the CAC 40 futures contract gained 65 points, or 1%, according to data from broker IG Markets. The CONTRACT on the DAX 40 was up 157 points, or 1.1%, and the FTSE 100 contract was up 51 points, or 0.7%.

 

Friday, Wall Street ended close to balance after a volatile session, torn between fears for growth and support from the Chinese central bank's interest rate cut. The Dow Jones Index (DJIA) ended up 9 points (+0.03%), at 31,261.90 points. The broader S&P 500 index closed unchanged at 3,901.36 points after falling 20% off its previous peak in session, a threshold synonymous with a bear market on Wall Street. The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.3% to 11,354.62 points. In Asia, the main indices are moving in scattered order on Monday. At the end of the session, the Nikkei index gained 0.6% in Tokyo. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 1.9 percent and the Shanghai Composite fell 0.3 percent.

 

U.S. Treasury yields rose Monday morning, after falling on Friday and over the whole of last week. The dollar weakened on Monday against other major currencies, including against the euro. However, the overall tone remains cautious in the markets due to fears about the economy, inflation and the tightening of monetary policies of global central banks, Commerzbank said.

  

Oil futures are rising Monday morning, buoyed by signs of strong demand as the U.S. enters the summer season, characterized by an increase in car travel. At 7:20 a.m., the July Contract for North Sea Brent gained 86 cents to $113.41 a barrel. The same maturity on light sweet crude (WTI) listed on the Nymex took 66 cents, to $ 110.84 a barrel.
