Facebook assured last Monday that it will block news content in Canada if the Online News Act is passed by Parliament. He is thus carrying out the threat he made in recent months when Bill C-18 was passed by the House of Commons and which is now being studied by

the Senate.

Kevin Chan, the global policy director of Meta, Facebook's parent company, told a parliamentary committee that to comply with Bill C-18, they will have to either operate in an imperfect regulatory environment or shut down the content of information in Canada. “It is therefore with a heavy heart that we are opting for this last solution,” he announced. The legislation proposed by Justin Trudeau's Liberals aims to force digital platforms, primarily Google and Facebook, to enter into fair compensation agreements with news companies for sharing their journalistic content

.

A en croire Kevin Chan, les utilisateurs de Facebook do not use the platform to read news, but rather to share “the ups and downs of their lives, what makes them happy or sad, what interests them and entertains them
