Le lundi 24 avril 2023, Accra, the Ghanaian capital, officially succeeded the Mexican city of Guadalajara as the 2023 World Book Capital of the United Nations Educational Organization, the science and culture (

UNESCO ).

At the launch ceremony of the 2023 World Book Capital, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said that books and reading are essential for all of us, as a source of information, questions and emotions, to bring us closer to the world. For Azoulay, with regard to the importance of reading for Ghana and for Africa, the choice of Accra as the 2023 World Book Capital was a call to action to support reading for all and remove obstacles to reading on the

African continent.

For his part, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that “the World Book Capital is more than a reading campaign. It is an opportunity for the government and international partners to take advantage of the diverse links with culture and education to deepen our collective actions to advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.”
