Women, Business and the Law 2023 is the ninth in a series of annual studies. It measures laws that affect women's economic opportunities in 190 economies.

The Women, Business and the Law 2023 project presents eight indicators structured around women's interactions with the law as they progress in their lives and careers, such as mobility, workplace, remuneration, marriage, parenting, entrepreneurship, assets and retirement. This project identifies obstacles to women's economic participation and encourages the reform of discriminatory laws.

This year's study takes into account new research, a review of the literature, and an analysis of 53 years of reforms for women's rights. Indicators provide evidence of the essential relationship between legal gender equality, employment and women's entrepreneurship.

In Africa, in the 2023 World Bank Index on Women, Business and the Law, Ghana maintained its 7th position in West Africa, but better than Nigeria (66.3%). Ghana achieved the maximum score of 100% in the areas of mobility, the workplace, and marriage. South Africa ranked 4th (88.1%), while Zimbabwe (86.9%) and Cape Verde (86.3%) ranked 5th and 6th globally. For their part, Ivory Coast and Gabon were jointly ranked 1st in Africa with a total score of 95%, surpassing Mauritius (89.9%) which ranked 3rd.
