The Australian mining company, Lucara Diamond Corp, said on its Facebook page on Wednesday, August 23, that it had discovered in Botswana the second largest diamond in the world, with 2,492 carats.

The Lucara Diamond Corp publication states that the company “is delighted to announce the recovery of an exceptional 2,492 carat diamond from its Karowe diamond mine in Botswana”. The company said that the half-kilo gemstone, detected in the Karowe mine in northeastern Botswana, Africa's largest diamond producer, is “one of the largest rough diamonds ever discovered”, behind the “Cullinan” diamond (3,100 carats), whose largest pieces were set in the British crown jewels
