The General Authority of Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) announced, on Wednesday 23 December, the launch of a new agri-food processing project in the zone Sokhna industrial plant. With a total estimated cost of 8 million dollars, the investment is supported by the Pitcairn company, following an agreement with MDC, industrial operator in the area.

According to a press release published by SCZONE, the project involves the establishment of a complex agri-food integrating several production units. These will be dedicated to the processing of potatoes and frozen vegetables, as well as as well as for the manufacture of ready-to-eat meals, intended both for the market local than for export.

The works of construction should take place over a period of two years. According to the responsible for the project, commissioning is expected at the beginning of 2027. According to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the Domestic potato production in Egypt grew by 9.7% for reach 9.6 million tons in 2024. Of this volume, approximately 11% is intended for export, while the majority is devoted to consumption domestic and seed production.
