In its 2021 annual report, the World Bank indicated that Cameroon was among the most indebted countries in Africa.

5.5 billion dollars or 11,109 billion CFA francs is the amount Cameroon owes to China, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank since September 30, 2021. Occupying the 7th place on the continental level, it is closely followed by Nigeria (4.8 billion dollars), Ghana (3.5 billion dollars) and DR-Congo (3.4 billion dollars). This ranking comes at a time when public debt is rising by 0.3% according to the Caisse Autonome d'Amortissement (CAA). This inflation is explained by the disbursement of budgetary support linked to the new economic and financial program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (II), the effectiveness of the new debt agreements and the issuance of public securities.
