From 13 to 16 September 2022, energy experts from ECOWAS member states met in Dakar to adopt a regional electricity code. This meeting was held with the intention of allowing greater access to electricity in the ECOWAS zone.

Tuesday, September 13, is the launch date of the “Haské” project to accelerate access to electricity, financed to the tune of of $317.5 million mainly by the World Bank. The launch was made in Niamey under the sponsorship of the Nigerian Minister of State in charge of Energy and Renewable Energies, Ibrahim Yacoubou.

It aims to accelerate access to electricity in Niger for households, health, education, and businesses and to offer clean and efficient cooking solutions.

Achieving the objectives is based on five components, ranging from the strengthening and expansion of electricity transmission and distribution networks to am& improvement; improving the operational performance of public services through institutional strengthening.

An information document regarding this project was first published on April 1, 2021, and the project agreement on March 1, 2022, prior to the publication of the agreement of financing on the 15th of the same month.

World Bank data the rate of access to electricity in Niger was one of the lowest in ECOWAS, at 19.3% in 2020 and the average rate of access to electricity was 50.2% in the same period.
