For alleged acts of corruption, illicit enrichment, perjury and embezzlement of public funds, the former president of the Constitutional Court was imprisoned in Conakry.

The arrest warrant that led to the arrest of Mohamed Lamine Bangoura follows several denunciations made by the Ministry of Justice. He accuses him of embezzlement of public funds. Indeed, suspicions of corruption and illegal enrichment, and sums estimated at several billion Guinean francs, are added to the charge. According to the Court for the Suppression of Economic and Financial Crimes (Crief), Mohamed Lamine Bangoura would have buildings in Guinea and the subregion, valued at hundreds of millions of CFA francs.

Thus, his detention would be the culmination of investigations into the facts alleged against him, according to Guinean lawyer Mamoudou Diakité. According to him, “pretrial detention is a provisional measure that aims to preserve the integrity of the investigation, to prevent the person concerned from carrying out maneuvers to remove evidence, for example. Therefore, the logical next step is the completion of the investigations, possibly the issuance of an order of referral to the court and possibly the judgment that will lead either to conviction or to an acquittal if the evidence is not sufficient to try the presumed guilty person.”
