MTN Nigeria has launched the fifth-generation (5G) network in Lagos with the promise to launch the national launch in Abuja as soon as possible.

Speaking to stakeholders during the commercial launch at its headquarters, CEO Karl Toriola said the company activated the 5G network in six G zones geopolitical with around 223 sites that are being accelerated very quickly. He said, “We started with around 223 sites, but we actually think we're going to move forward extremely quickly. So, you're going to see a rapid expansion of 5G coverage across the country in the months and years to come.

Toriola explained that the launch of 5G will not stop the deployment of the 4G network. He said that 4G remains on the data side and remains the company's daily bread and investments, with deployments for both networks to take place simultaneously. The executive vice president of NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta reassures that the commission will monitor the effectiveness of MTN's 5G activities and will not fail to be cautious where best practices are not applied.
