External debt: Tunisia in the Top 10 of the most indebted African countries

The World Bank announces in its latest report That Tunisia is ranked 10th among the most indebted African countries with foreign creditors.

At the end of 2024, the outstanding external debt of the Tunisia reached $40.4 billion, while debt service (principal and interest) was $3.8 billion for the year. La external debt is mainly composed of multilateral loans, which represent 63% of the total.

According to the World Bank, these funds come from mainly from international institutions. In particular 20% of the World Bank (BIRD), 11% of the African Bank development (BAD) and the rest, which is 12 %, via other multilateral organizations.

Bilateral debts are incurred directly with partner states. They represent 25% of the total. Germany has some 5%, Japan and France 4% each, while the remaining 12% are distributed among the other countries.

Except Tunisia, South Africa, Egypt and the Nigeria has the highest levels of external debt in mainland. South Africa is ahead of Egypt with a debt of 156 billion dollars, while Egypt and Nigeria both reach 109 billion Of dollars.

They are followed by Mozambique (70 billion dollars), Morocco (68 billion dollars), Angola (59 billion dollars) dollars), Senegal (47 billion dollars), Kenya (43 billion dollars) dollars) and Côte d'Ivoire (40.5 billion dollars).

The three most indebted countries are: South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria. They alone represent more than $53.7 billion in debt service for the year 2024.

Noted that in Africa, the persistence of deficits public and investment policies, especially in infrastructure, is pushing more and more countries to resort to external borrowing.
