On the occasion of the World Day of Social Justice on 20 February, the United Nations called for overcoming the digital divide exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis and coordinating labour regulation on digital platforms. Social justice also applies to the digital economy, the UN said. Over the past decade, the expansion of broadband connectivity, cloud computing and data has led to the proliferation of digital platforms, which have penetrated several sectors of the economy and societies. Digital platforms offer workers opportunities to generate income and benefits related to flexible work arrangements. However, they also present some challenges. Among other things, the regularity of work and income, their right to fair working conditions, social protection and an adequate standard of living, the use of skills and the right to form or join trade unions. For traditional businesses, the challenges include unfair competition from platforms. Another challenge for traditional businesses is the amount of funding needed to continuously adapt to digital transformations, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, and the insufficient availability of a reliable digital infrastructure in the Global South. Many countries have started to address some of the issues related to working conditions on digital work platforms. However, dialogue and policy coordination at the international level is needed, as these working platforms operate in multiple jurisdictions. This year's commemoration of the World Day of Social Justice supports the efforts of the international community in the search for solutions to achieve sustainable development, poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, universal social protection, gender equality and access to social well-being and justice for all. Let us recall that social justice is based on equal rights for all peoples and the possibility for all human beings without discrimination to benefit from economic and social progress throughout the world.
