The President of the Republic, Head of State, HE Issoufou Mahamadou inaugurated this Wednesday, March 17, 2021 the first crude oil thermal power plant in Niger, located in the Goudel district of Niamey. The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of the Presidents of the Institutions, members of the Government, those of the Diplomatic Corps, international organizations, representatives of the TFPs, regional and communal officials.

With a capacity of 89 MW, this thermal power plant was built under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement, in BOOT mode by the Mauritanian company Istithmar WEST AFRICA. The work was supervised by the Ministry of Energy and NIGELEC. The cost of the Goudel and Zinder Power Plant Projects is CFAF 66.25 billion.

"Energy is one of the priorities, because we are convinced that there is no economic development for a country without electric power," said Head of State Issoufou Mahamadou. He continues : "Moreover, the installed electrical power is an indicator of power at the country level. We have therefore decided to exploit all available energy sources at a lower cost to fuel Niger's economic development, because our villages, industries, agriculture etc. need energy."
The Goudel power plant comprises, among other things, a machine room consisting of six generators of unit power 14.82 MW each with their auxiliaries and a cell room consisting of medium voltage and low voltage protection cells, a control room comprising the SCADA control system, a crude oil fuel park; a cooling system with radiator, a gas exhaust circuit with a height of 42 m and a fire room with water tank of 750 m3.
The CEO of istithmar, EL Arby Baba Ainina, said that the construction of this thermal power plant reflects the strengthening of Niger's energy independence.
