Africa's largest economy is only about 60% electrified, according to World Bank data, while millions of households and businesses rely on gas-powered generators. To fill the gap, the financial institution announces technical and financial support that will allow the installation of 1000 solar electric mini-grids

.

The World Bank intends to help finance the construction of 1000 solar mini-grids in Nigeria, in partnership with the government and the private sector. The announcement was made on August 5, 2023 by Ajay Banga, president of the financial institution during a visit to the site of a mini-grid on the outskirts of the capital Abuja. Ajay Banga told reporters that nearly 150 mini-grids have already been built, thanks in part to funding from the World Bank. He then added: “We are in the process of building 300 more, but our ambition, with the government, is to go up to 1,000. We are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars being invested.”
