A report was published yesterday, Thursday, September 21, 2023, mentioning that six of the 16 migration actions funded by the European Union (EU) in three African countries are likely to violate the rules defined by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)

.

The EU funded 16 migration actions in Niger, Libya and Tunisia, with a total value of 667 million euros. Indeed, the EU allocates 10% of its €79.5 billion international aid programme to migration-related activities. According to OECD criteria, at least 93% of funds must promote development and well-being in developing countries. But according to the Oxfam report, a third of EU-funded migration actions in three African countries violate these rules

.

Euronews Stephanie Pope, Oxfam's expert on EU migration, said that “EU aid is being used to support the Coast Guard despite their extremely poor human rights record.” However, the OECD has considered that any action that “neglects the rights of forcibly displaced persons and migrants” is not considered aid

.

In addition, a spokeswoman for the European Commission refutes the claim that money intended for fighting poverty is being diverted to fight immigration. According to him, most actions contribute to addressing the root causes of migration.
