A Beninese student went to court on the 17th July 2025, following the cancellation of flight HC342 Cotonou-Dakar, requesting the condemnation of Air Senegal SA to the “payment of the sum of seven hundred seventy-seven thousand four hundred fifty (777,450) CFA francs under the cost of the plane ticket plus the uninsured service and the repair in case flight cancellation and damages estimated at four million (4,000,000) CFA francs”.

The Cotonou Commercial Court condemned the airline Air Senegal SA to pay more than one million CFA francs to one Beninese student, after the cancellation of a flight to Dakar which took place on the eve of departure.

According to facts dating back to 2024, the student purchased a ticket from air Senegal at 518,300 FCFA in order to go to Senegal to continue his university studies. In particular, he had to participate in a selection test at the Science Training and Research Unit Health of Thiès, scheduled for September 30, 2024.

September 27, less than 24 hours before departure, the company informs him by email of the cancellation of the flight Faced with the emergency, the student immediately requests a re-routing prior to the date of its review, which was not granted. The Court notes that no alternative was offered to the passenger, nor re-routing on another flight, or placement with another airline, or immediate refund of the ticket.

For these reasons, the Cotonou Commercial Court has ordered Air Senegal SA to reimburse 518,300 CFA francs corresponding to the price of the cancelled ticket, and to pay 500,000 CFA francs in damages, for a total of 1,018,300 CFA francs.
