The lawyers of four environmental associations indicated on Monday, October 2, 2023 that these associations filed a complaint against TotalEnergies and its EACOP oil project in Tanzania and Uganda.

Darwin Climax Coalitions, Sea Shepherd France, Wild Legal, and Stop EACOP-Stop Total in Uganda are the companies that filed this complaint on 22 September. Indeed, lawyers William Bourdon and Vincent Brengarth announced that “TotalEnergies must no longer continue to contribute to climate change knowingly, freely and with impunity.” The complaint involves several offences. It is the failure to fight a disaster, involuntary attacks on the integrity of the person, destruction, damage or deterioration of property belonging to another person likely to create a danger for persons, and manslaughter

TotalEnergies announced last year a $10 billion investment agreement with Uganda, Tanzania and the Chinese company CNOOC, including the construction of a 1,443-kilometer heated oil pipeline (EACOP) connecting the Lake Albert deposits in western Uganda to the Tanzanian coast on the Indian Ocean.
