Faced with the depreciation of the pound, Lebanese officials, meeting this Monday, March 9, 2021 at the Baabda Palace took several measures related to the financial and security situation in the country. Present at this meeting were the outgoing Prime Minister, Hassane Diab, the Ministers of Defense, Zeina Acar, Finance, Ghazi Wazni, Interior, Mohammad Fahmi, and Economy, Raoul Nehmé, the Governor of the Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salamé, the Commander-in-Chief of the Army Joseph Aoun as well as security cadres, banking and financial.

The socio-economic crisis and the record fall of the Lebanese pound have led policymakers to act. The "financial, economic and security" meeting held under the leadership of President Michel Aoun, focused on the "manipulation of the exchange rate" and the closure of online platforms compiling the average exchange rates in force on the parallel market.
Indeed, the Lebanese pound has experienced a new plunge, breaking all the records reached since the beginning of the crisis. The gradual depletion of the Central Bank's foreign exchange reserves, allocated to subsidizing basic food products, raises fears of the worst while more than half of the Lebanese live below the poverty line.
Participants in the Baabda meeting instructed the security forces to take action against "any person who violates the provisions of the Currency Code and the law organizing the profession of stockbroker" by engaging in speculative operations, whether they are approved or non-approved money changers.
Security forces have also been tasked with shutting down all unlicensed electronic platforms and groups that "set the rate of the US dollar against the pound" and coordinating these efforts internationally so that any international electronic platform is shut down.
