From Thursday 24 to Friday 25 November 2022, the 9th General Assembly of the member countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and their audiovisual regulatory body took place. The fight against hate speech was on the agenda of this meeting held in the Senegalese capital.

“Combating the proliferation of hate and violent media speech and misinformation” is the theme of the two-day event. According to the president of the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA) of Senegal, Babacar Diagne, “this meeting is an opportunity for us to address this issue, which is of capital importance for African countries in general and those constituting our dear platform in particular.”

In addition, former director general of the Senegalese Radio and Television (RTS, public), Diagne believes that “technologies are expanding the field of what is possible in terms of communication, at the same time weakening the foundations of traditionally multicultural and ethnic societies.”
