The fight against money laundering has been on a growing trend in Burkina Faso since 2016. According to the 2020 report of the Economic and Social Council, the dynamics of the scourge seem "growing at an accelerated pace". The Economic and Social Council, in its new report, unveils the mechanisms for combating money-laundering and the financing of terrorism in Burkina Faso. The phenomenon seems to have a growing trend in the country. As proof, the number registered at the Ouagadougou High Court has increased from three cases in 2016 to 37 in 2020. "The correlation with the evolution of the terrorist act in Burkina Faso over the same period is not established. The low number in 2016 and 2017 is mainly due to the fact that in the old method of prosecution, the prosecutor's office did not include in the charges the offence of money laundering in certain predicate offences," explains the ESC. Indeed, following several training workshops, prosecutors have been encouraged to prosecute systematically for money laundering when they are dealing with an economic and financial crime involving large sums of money. According to the GIABA report, the main sources of income from crime (terrorism) in Burkina Faso are "tax and excise duty fraud, embezzlement of public funds, drug trafficking, illicit foreign exchange, illicit enrichment, crime related to the trafficking of gold and wildlife". Between 2005 and 2015, losses in this sector due to corruption and mismanagement were estimated at more than 600 billion CFA francs, which represents a loss of around 32% of the State's own revenues.
