The fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a growing global fight. This time, Nigeria and 99 other countries have committed themselves with respect to the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The PSMA is the only fisheries management agreement that is legally binding and universal in scope. It is the first also the first international agreement. Several countries are supporting this agreement, and Nigeria, Morocco, Angola and Eritrea are the latest countries to support it.

In a statement, FAO announced that “now, 60% of the world's port states have committed to respecting the agreement, which is an international binding instrument for fight against IUU fishing. According to QU Dongyu, Director-General of FAO, “growing consumer demand and the transformation of agri-food systems in fisheries and aquaculture have boosted global fish production. In his words, “they have pushed fish production to its highest level and it is widely recognized that there is a need to step up the fight against IUU fishing.”
