The ECOWAS single currency announced by Alassane Ouattara will no longer see the light of day in 2020. This currency announced in a hurry after the actions of several pan-African personalities including the activist Kemi Seba will finally no longer be implemented this year despite the French announcements and Ivorians.

As a reminder, for several years now several personalities have denounced the troubled role played by this currency in the economic situation in French-speaking Africa. In response to demonstrations increasingly hostile to the currency, its heritage but also in some cases to France, the Ivorian authorities had taken the lead and announced a new currency.

An announcement and discontent in English-speaking Africa

Only downside, the announcement of the common currency did not respect the commitments made by the countries including the English-speaking countries. The fact, for example, that the currency remained pegged to the Euro was not to everyone's liking, particularly Ghana and Nigeria, who did not hesitate to let it be known. These problems coupled with the economic crisis and the crisis born following the pandemic ended up convincing the presidents of ECOWAS to postpone the launch of the new currency. A small victory therefore for the Pan-Africanists and for the English-speaking countries.
