The number of electronic money accounts opened within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) increased by 37.9% in 2019, indicates the Bceao in a new report.

It actually stood at 51,009,424 in 2019, compared to 37,001,348 at the end of 2018, according to this document from the BCEAO banking commission. Active accounts represent 47.6%, against 48.4% the previous year.

As of December 31, 2019, the Union had 10 authorized electronic money institutions (Eme), compared to eight a year earlier. These establishments “are spread over five countries”.

“The subsidiaries of the French group Orange, four in number, occupy a dominant position within the system of digital financial services offered by Eme approved in the Uemoa”.

The report indicates that "as of December 31, 2019, the outstanding balance of electronic money issued by these taxable persons stood at 387.6 billion CFA francs, against 332.7 billion in 2018, an increase of 16.5 %”.

Transactions via mobile telephony carried out through Eme increased by 26.0% during the period under review, amounting to 26,096.7 billion at the end of 2019, against 20,704.3 billion a year earlier. early.

As for the overall volume of transactions, it recorded an annual increase of 40.3%, reaching 2,406,937,675 transactions during the period under review.
