The A9 motorway, the interconnection route of the states of Kano and Katsina, is strategic for traffic crossing the Sahara.
The extension of the A9 motorway serves neighbouring Niger, a country with which Nigeria is determined to boost trade. The scope of the project concerns the rehabilitation and conversion of this axis, into a double-track road with a linear length of 90.65 km. The infrastructure, which connects the two border states with Niger, also includes engineering structures, including the construction of 3 bridges, as well as a number of amenities to facilitate traffic.
The execution of the work, which will last 24 months, is entrusted to CGC (China Geo-Engineering Corporation) Nigeria Limited, the subsidiary of the Chinese construction giant CGCOC Group Co. Ltd. The cost of the project is estimated at $153 million, an envelope approved in November 2020 by the Federal Executive Council. This road, due to the location of the two states it serves, is strategic for traffic crossing the Sahara.
