Nigerian government authorities launched a new strategy on July 11 to stop piracy and kidnapping in the Gulf of Guinea.

Eliminate piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, secure trade routes, reassure crews and support local communities. This is the goal of the new strategy newly developed by the International Shipowners' Association (ICS), Bimco, the association of oil tankers Intertanko and bulk carriers Intercargo, and Ocimf. Despite the overall decline in global piracy in 2021, threat levels in the region remain high. In terms of attacks, they have decreased by almost 60% in 2021, following the implementation of an anti-piracy project by the Nigerian Navy and Nimasa.
