In order to reach net zero by 2060, officials said at the launch of the country's energy transition plan that Nigeria needs at least $10 billion in additional funding per year. This plan would involve gas as a transition fuel.

Nigeria's energy transition plan aims to extend access to electricity to all 200 million Nigé citizens Rians by 2030 in addition to the challenge of reaching net zero by 2060. Access to electricity is considered essential to ensure a fair transition for developing nations. For Environment Minister Mohammed Abdullahi, “as a continent, we must reject one-size-fits-all prescriptive solutions.” According to him, any plan that would decarbonize Nigeria without providing increased access to electricity is described as “unfair and unacceptable.”

Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed, for her part, said that access to finance has “significantly hampered efforts to raise funds for the gas infrastructure”. According to him, Nigeria needed significant external investment and help from the private sector. “Access to finance remains the biggest challenge to decarbonization,” she said.
