A loan of 39.64 million euros was approved on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, in Abidjan by the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank. The objective of this funding is to implement the Project for Access to Safe Services and Sanitation for Sustainable Resilience in disadvantaged areas of the country.

The Access to Safe Services and Sanitation Project will be implemented over a period of four years (2023-2027) and various works will be carried out. In fact, five drinking water treatment units for drinking water will be built. There will be the rehabilitation and security of drinking water supply structures in six major rural centres, the extension and densification of drinking water networks over a distance of 480 kilometres, the construction of 15,000 social connections and 60 standpipes.

With regard to sanitation, 67 public latrines will be built for schools and health centers, 13,200 family latrines, 4 pumping stations, 2 wastewater treatment plants, 5 sewage treatment plants, 5 sewage treatment plants and 70 kilometers of sewer networks to which at least 250,000 households will be connected.

For Marie-Laure Akin Olugbade, Director General of the African Development Bank for West Africa, “the project will above all reduce the regional disparities that persist in people's access to drinking water and sanitation, despite all the efforts already deployed by the government with the support of partners. It will also support the mechanisms for implementing the Action Plan and managing water resources.”
