After approving innovation in the agricultural sector in Mauritania on November 17, for a total of $50 million in financing, or nearly 1.9 billion Ouguiyas (MRU), on December 12, 2022, the World Bank Board of Directors signed the & rsquo; financing agreement for the development support project with the Government of Mauritania (PADISAM).

The $50 million is being granted in the form of credit and will be used to strengthen the development of land resources and the promotion of inclusive and sustainable commercial agriculture as part of a dynamic process to modernize the sector. Cristina Isabel Panasco Santos, World Bank Resident Representative in Nouakchott, announced that “the World Bank is committed to supporting the development of agriculture in Mauritania as a key priority sector for the country's social and economic development, given the significant potential it offers and their impact on the living standards of rural populations in particular.”

For his part, Mohamed Fadel Hammady, the project manager emphasizes that this project provides innovative solutions for both irrigated and rainfed agriculture. According to him, this project introduces, for the first time in the country, an integrated landscape management approach using climate-smart agriculture methods in rainfed areas and the exploitation of agricultural land by private developers on the basis of tripartite agreements between the State, Developers and Riparian Communities for the development of sectors with high economic potential in the irrigated zone.
