A document recently published on the website of the African Development Bank (BAD), the institution highlights climate-smart agriculture as a lever for strengthening security food on the African continent.

The ADB indicates that its program “Technologies for the transformation of African agriculture” (TAAT) has enabled more of 13 million farmers to access climate-adapted technologies as well as training in best adaptation practices. According to her, these actions contributed to an estimated increase of 25 million tons in agricultural production in less than ten years. In particular, the program deploys seed varieties resistant to drought and heat, with the aim to improve yields, to support agricultural incomes and to stimulate employment.

For the institution, agriculture remains a sector key in sub-Saharan Africa, where it employs more than half of the working population, and that it is particularly exposed to the effects of climate change.

The financial institution considers that the generalization of agricultural practices climate-smart — in particular the adjustment of sowing calendars or the adoption of more resistant varieties — can strengthen the resilience of sector and limit production losses. The BAD cites the example of Nigeria, where the implementation of the TAAT program has made it possible to extend the areas devoted to wheat, increased from 11,820 hectares in 2021 to nearly 400,000 hectares in 2025
