The 3.9% drop in economic activity excluding agriculture and forestry in Senegal, recorded in July 2020, worsened in August 2020 with an achievement of -7.6%, according to established data. by the Forecasting and Economic Studies Department (DPEE) based in Dakar.
According to this structure dependent on the Senegalese Ministry of Economy, Planning and Cooperation, this poor performance is attributable both to the secondary sector (-9.3%), the primary sector (-30.4%), the public administration (-10.7%), than in the tertiary sector (-2.0%). The contraction of the primary sector excluding agriculture and forestry is linked to the sharp drop in the fishing (-34.0%) and livestock (-28.4%) sub-sectors. Over one year, a less pronounced decline of 15.2% in the primary sector was noted by the DPEE, in August 2020, in connection with the drop in the controlled slaughter of meat (-9.6%) and fishing (- 24.3%).

In terms of secondary activity, the decline is mainly attributable to the manufacture of agri-food products (-9.8%), construction (-18.5%) and spinning, weaving and textile finishing (-21 %). However, sub-sectors have done well with varying progress. This is the case for extractive activities (+9.8%), the production and distribution of electricity and gas (+4.5%) and the manufacture of basic chemicals (+4.8%) . Over one year, the secondary sector consolidated by 4.1% during the period under review. This improvement is mainly attributable to extractive activities (+24.5%), spinning, weaving and textile finishing (+62.1%) and the manufacture of soaps, detergents and cleaning products (+162 .9%).



On the other hand, the manufacture of agri-food products (-4.3%), metallurgy-foundry and manufacture of metal works (-26.3%), the manufacture of transport equipment (-39.5%), the oil refining and coking (-41.3%) and wood sawing and planing (-44.1%) recorded poor performance over the period. Over one year, a 5.9% contraction in economic activity was noted in August 2020, under the effect of the drop in activity in the tertiary sector (-5.5%), public administration ( -17.7%) and primary (-15.2%). Furthermore, the secondary sector consolidated by 4.1% over the period.
