Senegal has just launched this Tuesday in Dakar the works of the first seawater desalination plant of Senegal to improve the supply of the metropolis facing shortages.

The Mamelles desalination plant was launched by President Macky Sall despite the fears of fishermen and environmentalists. The plant, located on the coast in the middle of the city, should have a capacity of 100,000 m3/day and help put an end to the water shortages that plague the lives of many Dakar residents. The commissioning of the plant and the parallel renewal of 316 km of a largely obsolete distribution network "will have a positive impact on 16 communes, or more than a million people in areas located on the high ground or at the end of the network," said the Head of State. The infrastructure will diversify the supply of Dakar, largely dependent on Lake Guiers, located more than 250 km away.
