Héritage Fondation has published its latest index of economic freedoms. Togo is doing better than last year, ranking 140th out of 180 countries.

According to the American Heritage Foundation, the Togolese economy had "little freedom" in 2020. Togo thus offers an increase of 18 places in the world ranking, 6 on the African level.

With a score of 54.1 points, Togo moves from its 158th place last year to 140th place in 2020. The country is ranked 29th out of 51 African countries. Very far behind Mauritius (74.9 points) first African nation and 21st in the world, behind Côte d'Ivoire (59.7 points) 10th African and 101st in the world, Ghana (59.4 points) 12th African, 104th in the world, and all its neighbors in West Africa.

An American think tank and lobby based in Washington, The Heritage Foundation has been measuring economic freedom in the world since 1995. The ranking is based on 12 quantitative factors grouped into 4 main categories: the rule of law (property rights, government integrity, judicial efficiency); the preponderance of government (public spending, tax burden, fiscal health); regulatory efficiency (freedom of business, freedom of work, monetary freedom); open markets (commercial freedom, freedom of investment, financial freedom).
