The members of the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) examined and unanimously adopted the draft law on the Customs Code of Burkina Faso on Monday, 24 March 2025 in Ouagadougou.

The bill contains 474 articles. Among other things, it will enable Burkina Faso to acquire an innovative legal instrument in line with current realities and priorities, and to modernise the public service of the customs administration through the facilities and simplifications provided for in certain areas. ALT members believe that this bill will be able to improve revenue mobilization and boost the national economy due to the effects induced by: the fluidity of customs operations, the simplification of procedures, digitalization and new economic regimes. It will also enable actors, in particular customs officials, to have greater legal and material resources in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism as well as in the control and fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in view of the current security context

According to the minister in charge of the economy, Dr. Aboubacar Nacanabo, the customs code currently in force in Burkina Faso is 63 years old. For the latter, this new code takes into account the challenges of the moment with a certain number of innovations. “And one of the major innovations is taking into account new economic regimes that will make it possible to ensure better competitiveness for Burkinabe companies,” he said.
