Kenya Airways (KQ) reported a profit of Ksh 5.4 billion ($39.9 million) for 2024, a record in 11 years, compared to a loss of Ksh 22.6 billion ($205.4 million) in 2023.

Over the year, the company increased its passenger transport capacity by 10% (measured in seat kilometers), which among other things allowed a 4% growth in traffic for a total of 5.23 million travelers. Freight volumes, for their part, increased by 25%. “This shows that the recovery strategy is bearing fruit. These results are remarkable, as they also mark the largest number of passengers carried by the airline and the highest turnover achieved in the company's history,” said Allan Kilavuka

, its CEO.

Having multiplied the losses over more than a decade, KQ had to be bailed out by the Kenyan state, which in recent years has shown its desire to break with this model and find a strategic partner. While waiting to attract new investors, the carrier is undergoing a restructuring program that includes, among other things, the extension of its network and its fleet. In this case, last year, it launched new lines to Mogadishu, Maputo

and Eldoret.

According to Allan Kilavuka, the carrier's plans are to maintain the policy of consolidating finances, training staff and expanding the network to destinations such as London (scheduled for early July), as well as improving the passenger experience. Despite this upturn, KQ still has to pay off its previous debts in order to achieve financial stability
