The first meeting of the Mauritanian-Moroccan joint technical committee held on Friday marks a new stage in the strengthening of economic and diplomatic ties between Mauritania and Morocco. On this occasion, the trade agreement signed in 1986 was revised, with the stated aim of adapting the legal framework to the current requirements of bilateral trade and increasing trade to 350 million dollars by 2024. This meeting reflects a strong political will to reinvigorate trade flows. It was chaired by the Mauritanian Minister of Commerce and Tourism, Zeinebou Mint Ahmednah, and the Moroccan Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Omar Ijjira
.In reality, the regional economic context has changed profoundly since the signing of the 1986 agreement. This agreement was initially focused on customs exemptions, but no longer met the ambitions of both partners. Indeed, the latter have been multiplying sectoral conventions and agreements for several years in order to densify
their cooperation. In the field of infrastructure, Moroccan companies are now involved in the modernization of the Autonomous Port of Nouadhibou. With regard to fisheries, the signing of a fisheries cooperation protocol makes it possible to structure access to resources and to exchange best practices. In 2021, a customs facilitation agreement made it possible to streamline trade procedures, especially at the Guerguerat border post, which is essential for flows between Morocco, Mauritania and the whole of West Africa
.Beyond commercial considerations, Mauritania and Morocco share a common understanding of the challenges of stability and regional development.
