In order to strengthen its support for the water sector in Tunisia, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed two new loan agreements worth a total of 30 million euros.

With the National Water Management and Distribution Company (Sonede), the EIB signed a loan agreement of 22 million euros and another agreement was signed with 22 million euros signed with the Republic of Tunisia. The financial institution said in a statement that this financing will allow the finalization of a structuring drinking water supply project in Greater Tunis, the most densely populated region in the country and which faces a growing demand for

water.

The project includes the construction of a new treatment plant in Béjaoua, the installation of water supply pipes, the installation of pump stations and the construction of reservoirs to serve the whole of Greater Tunis, including areas of future development such as the pole Financier of Tunis. The project will contribute concretely to ensuring a reliable and sustainable service in a region with high population growth, in a context of increasing pressure on water resources

The additional funding is co-financed equally with the French Development Agency (AfD) under the Reciprocal Delegation Initiative (IDR), a mechanism for cooperation between European funders, continues the same source.
