Based on the inconsistency between the country's legislation and the Monetary Union Convention, on December 20, 2022, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) invited the countries of the Cemac zone to stop the cryptocurrency launched by the Central African Republic.

A statement published by the International Monetary Fund mentions that “the directors encourage the national and regional authorities of CEMAC to resolve the inconsistency between R&D legislation in a cooperative manner. Central African public opinion on cryptocurrencies and the Cemac Convention”. For the same source, these administrations “strongly encourage regional authorities to strengthen coordination in order to improve the regulatory capacity of digital assets, with the aim of preserving the single currency, managing risks and protecting consumers, while allowing legitimate innovations.”

As far as the CAR is concerned, this IMF decision on the establishment of a cryptocurrency by the CAR goes against the new regulation governing the financial market common to the countries of the subregion. Since August 1, 2022, the regulation in question has integrated the notions of digital assets and digital tokens.
