In the African mining sector, the use of renewable energies has become more democratic in recent years. The current Fekola solar power plant, which was commissioned in 2021, has a capacity of 30 MW.

By the third quarter of 2024, the capital of the Fekola solar power plant will be increased by 22 megawatt peaks. This was reported by the Canadian B2Gold on Friday, January 27. He states that this will result in a reduction of 24 000 tons per year in greenhouse gas emissions from the mine. Indeed, the power plant expansion project framework is part of the company's objective of reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, compared to 2021 levels.

Thus, with the intention of responding to pressure from investors and calls from environmental organizations, several mining companies have developed and unveiled climate strategies in recent years. Construction work is expected to start in the third quarter of 2023 in Fekola. The Fekola solar power plant, in operation since April 2021, has a capacity of 30 MW and powers the second largest gold mine in Mali.
